World Class Hunting: Guided Elk, Deer, Antelope, Mountain Lion & more

Taking a limited number of hunters each year, Wood River Ranch boasts one of the most exclusive hunting destinations on the market.  We offer elite guided trophy hunts for Elk, Mule Deer, Whitetail, Pronghorn, Merriam Turkey, Mountain Lion, Shiras Moose, and Big Horn Sheep. With Five Star accommodations at the ranch and two licensed Wilderness Camps in the Shoshone National Forest, we offer the best of both worlds. Uniquely located up the Wood River, our hay fields are the highest irrigated ground in the valley. This makes us a natural hotspot for Mountain Wildlife like none other.

The flexibility of being able to hunt from high in camp, and down at the ranch allows us to be able to hunt where the Elk are, no matter the weather. We take a limited number of hunters each year to ensure minimal pressure and maximum trophy quality. You are guaranteed to see staggering numbers of wildlife of all species, and experience the finest in western hospitality.

We also have exclusive hunting rights on the historic 31,000 acre 91 Ranch located on the face of Carter Mountain.  The ranch is a natural wintering ground for migrating Elk, making it an epic late season destination.  It is also home to huge numbers of Pronghorn Antelope rivaling any place in the state!

What can be hunted?

Deer Areas 116 and 117

Wyoming’s Type 1 deer tag allows a hunter to choose your species, Mule Deer or Whitetail.  There is also a Type 3 tag which is Whitetail only and runs the month of November.

The 117 tag is a Mule Deer tag and not for the faint at heart.  It is a High Country National Forest tag that opens September 15th for Rifle.  Hunters should expect a physically demanding, horseback hunt at high altitude but with excellent trophy potential.

The 116 tag is an Off National Forest tag in which we hunt 35,000 acres of private ranch property.  Hunters can expect Spot and Stalk as well as Ground Blind Hunts producing fantastic Mule Deer and Whitetail.  Again, our September archery hunt is hard to beat with an excellent opportunity to harvest a Velvet Buck of either species.  We consistently harvest Mule Deer 160 B&C and up and Whitetail 150 B&C and up.  We had 100% success in 2016 with deer in that range.

Elk Areas 61, 62 and 63,64

Wood River Ranch is comprised of Private, State, and BLM lands in both 62 and 63 with our Wilderness Camp in 63. We border the 2.5 million acre Shoshone National forest and enjoy private access into some of the best Elk hunting country these areas have to offer.

Our most sought after hunt is our September archery hunt in camp.  Archery Hunts are seven days with guaranteed five full days of hunting.  Archery hunts can go up to ten days, at a prorated daily rate, to greatly improve success rates and allow our hunters to be a little selective. The Rifle season opens October 1st and runs through the 21st.

We also enjoy exclusive hunting rights on the historic, 31,000 acre, 91 Ranch located on the face of Carter Mountain.  The ranch is a natural wintering ground for migrating elk making it an epic late season hot spot!  This is area 61 with a Bull season running October 15 – November 15 and a cow season running September 1 – December 21.

Rifle Bull hunts are seven or eight days, camp or lodge, with guaranteed five full days of hunting, and rarely last the whole week. With no more than five or six hunters in all three areas, for the entire season, our hunters can expect the highest quality service, in a hunting environment that never feels crowded. We enjoyed 100% success in 2016 with all bulls being better than 300 B&C!

Rifle cow hunts are three full hunting days with 90% success rates!  Group discounts available.

Pronghorn Antelope Area 82 and 110

Our Antelope hunts are second to none and can be a great addition to an Elk or Deer Hunt.  Our season opens Sept 20th and runs through Oct 14th.   Conveniently overlapping, Elk and Deer Hunters have the unique opportunity to “double up” making your trip to the west a hunt of a lifetime!  We hunt approximately 35,000 acres of private ranch property and 2016 produced 100% success for trophy buck Antelope!

Merriam Turkey Area 10

We have the rare opportunity to hunt Merriam Turkeys in on of the most picturesque places the Mountain West has to offer.  We have an excellent population of birds on the ranch year round, and hunters can expect an exciting Turkey hunt in Elk country!  We enjoy a 100% success rate and our Toms exhibit the stark white band on the tail feathers, characteristic of a true Merriam.

Shiras Moose Area 9
Big Horn Sheep Area 5

Because of the difficulty involved with drawing these tags, we like to talk to hunters with tag in hand.  With Big Horns frequently seen watering near our Wilderness Camp and a lot of time spent in the area, we can offer a Sheep Hunt that rivals any Outfitter  around.  Likewise with Moose frequenting our river bottoms and a lot of time spent in the surrounding National Forest, we are second to none for this area.

Mountain Lion Area 19

With Five Star accommodations at the ranch and some of the finest Lion country in the west, our Mountain Lion hunts are unparalleled.  You will be guided by our friend and neighbor Fred Thomas who is a World Class Hounds Man with a lifetime of experience.    The tag is guaranteed over the counter and the season runs from October to March of the following year.  We typically try to wait until November when the rest of the hunting season has quieted down.   Hunters can expect the most physically demanding hunt of your life so be in shape!  Again, because we take a limited number of hunters, we are very flexible based on your schedule and the weather, which greatly increases success rates.

At Wood River Ranch we enjoy the finest in luxury western accommodations. Our Lodge features a commercial kitchen, fine dinning room and living areas, two fire places, a billiards room, a custom made bar and a fitness room complete with a steam shower/sauna. With plenty of windows and a wrap around porch, we enjoy a spectacular view of the Wood River Valley, framed with Noon Point as its backdrop. With lavishly appointed interiors, it’s truly a gem of the west.

Not to be out shined, our two guest cabins are equally matched. Hawks Rest features 4 rooms, each with a private bathroom, queen size bed, gas log fireplace, refrigerator and private sitting area under a very large window overlooking the valley. With a large porch and a million dollar view, it’s a favorite for our fishermen as it is situated right on the banks of our stocked trout pond.

The Bunkhouse is far more than the name implies. Newly renovated, it features six rooms with a common living area ,complete with a kitchen and his and hers community bathrooms.

Both cabins wouldn’t be complete without 1000 thread count sheets, imported comforters and shams, Wood River Ranch bathrobes and slippers, and of course collectable works of art that reflect the spirit of the west.
